About the Ada Home

Context

Ada is one part of the effort we are making toward the development of software engineering as an applied science. The Ada Home endorses sound engineering principles, many of which are embodied by Ada.

Your responsibility, dear reader, is to be a good engineer, and in particular to keep in mind why Ada is what it is, so that you will not stray away from the software engineering principles that were carefully considered before turning Ada into an international standard.

The concerns that presided to the original design of Ada were:

• reliability,
• maintainability,
• programming as a human activity, and
• efficiency.

The goals of the 1995 revision were to provide:

• greater flexibility and extensibility,
• additional control over storage management and synchronization, and
• standardized packages oriented toward supporting important application areas.

Many of us create software that makes a life-and-death difference in the world. We can be proud of it. The better we are at using Ada in critical and other applications, the better our world will be.
